On pursuing holiness, Acts 5:32 is more direct: "And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."

On praying, Luke 11:13 is more direct: "If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Tim, on the oath, I think so. Jordan suggests that it is all connected with circumcision, because of the obvious proximity. Circumcision represents a symbolic "cutting off," a giving up of your seed to God. Thus, Abraham entrusted the continuation of his seed to Eliezer. The connection to Jacob is less obvious, but Jordan suggests that Jacob's wound is a greater circumcision, a kind of a new covenant that goes beyond Abraham in terms of calling and blessing. In the face of Esau, Jacob entrusts his wives and offspring to God. There is a wound, a weakness and cutting off of human potency, and a being set apart for God.

I don't know about the pieces of the offerings. I've heard some speculation (e.g., as to the order in which things are made to ascend, which pieces are given to whom, etc.) but nothing that feels like it has strong confirmation from elsewhere.

I've wondered if Jacob's hip/thigh wound had something to do with the "hand under the thigh" oath as seen in Gen 24:2,9 and Gen 47:29. It's the same underlying Hebrew "yārēk" in all three passages.

Also, as a body-part-of-promise, you see God allot the thigh-piece of certain offerings to the sons of Aaron (Lev 7:33, though this does use a different Hebrew word—the Gen verses refer to the torso/side/thigh, while the Lev verses use "šôk" which much more clearly is a piece of the leg)

Scott, Thanks for writing this. It was encouraging to read.

I was very disappointed in a sermon I heard last summer. It was supposed to be on the Great Commission, but instead, was mostly about parenting. The pastor even went so far as to say that moms who home school do not need to pursue evangelism because they are already doing that by teaching their children.

I agree with you that evangelism is not parenting, and parenting is not evangelism. I think that when they are taught as the same thing, the work of the Spirit is quenched, not only in the lives of children, but also in the lives of their parents. Instead of seeking the leading of the Spirit as to where they should minister and share the gospel, parents can become introverted, focusing only on their family, and missing the work that the Spirit could be doing through them to spread the gospel and grow the church. Church growth in the New Testament is not merely accomplished by procreation, but by people following the Holy Spirit and telling the gospel to unbelievers they are led to meet.

On the other hand, evangelism and the fight against abortion can go together. From high-profile people like Bernard Nathanson and Abby Johnson to random people on the street (http://www.180movie.com/), there have been many examples of how showing someone that abortion is wrong led to showing them that they need Jesus. Evangelicals are very committed to fighting the evil practice of abortion, but what about the people that practice it? Sometimes it seems like the evangelical world is less concerned with reaching out to them and showing them Jesus. And this, I believe, is the only way to put an end to the practice of abortion.
